Things to do in Prague while your partner recovers

You came to look after someone, and you have 5 to 10 days with long quiet stretches. Here is how to split them: short outings you can share, the things your patient has to skip, and a day trip for when they are resting.

Your job on the trip

  • Be there for the clinic appointments and the first night after the procedure.
  • Carry the bags. After most surgery, lifting is off the list for weeks.
  • Keep fluids, medicines from the clinic and the clinic's phone number to hand.
  • Know where the nearest pharmacy is. Pharmacies (lékárna) are easy to find in the centre, and a few stay open 24 hours. Your hotel can point to the nearest one.
  • Emergency number: 112 for all emergencies; 155 for an ambulance.

Short outings to share

Seated, short and close to the clinic districts. Most fit the early recovery days. Check each day's rules in the patient's guide.

  • One-hour Vltava cruise

A seated hour on the river past Charles Bridge and the Castle.

  • Black light theatre

Prague's silent theatre of glowing puppets and dancers. Seated, indoors, about 90 minutes.

Six synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery, walked in about two hours.

Art Nouveau halls and the Smetana concert hall on a guided tour.

Gentle walking, indoors, about 1 hour

Things to do on your own

Your patient has to skip these on most days, so they are ideal while they rest.

  • Beer spa

A warm bath with hops and yeast, with unlimited beer from a tap by the tub.

    Seated, indoors, about 1.5 hours

Four hours of Czech food in a small group, with drinks along the way.

Gentle walking, indoors, about 3 hours

A day trip, if you have a free day

  • Karlovy Vary spa town

Hot springs and spa colonnades, two hours west.

Gentle walking, some open-air walking, about 9 hours

Long days away are best on a day when your patient is comfortable and has no appointment.

Where to eat

  • Kulajda or potato soup. Creamy dill and mushroom soup or bramboračka in a pub or canteen.
  • Svíčková. Beef in a sweet cream vegetable sauce with bread dumplings and cranberries.
  • Pho in Vinohrady. Prague has a large Vietnamese community and excellent pho.
  • Koláče. Round pastries with poppy seed, plum or sweet cheese.
  • Chlebíčky. Open sandwiches piled with ham, egg salad and pickles.
  • Smažený sýr. Fried cheese with tartar sauce: the Czech student classic.
  • Pilsner in a classic pub. Unpasteurised tank beer is the local pride.
