Things to do in Tijuana after dental work

A day-by-day plan for the days between dental appointments in Tijuana: what is safe after implants, what to see in Zona Río and Centro, and what to eat when you can only manage soft food.

Rules last checked against the cited guidance on 2 November 2026.

Make a dated calendar for your trip

At a glance

How long to stay
5 to 10 days for implant placement or All-on-4; a second trip months later for the final teeth is common
What the rules are about
The first 72 hours bring swelling and some bruising. The rules are about soft, cool food, no smoking or straws, no strenuous exercise and keeping heat away from the wound.
Weather
Mild and dry most of the year, around 20 to 27°C in summer. Bright sun even when it feels cool.
Getting around
Clinics usually include transfers from the San Ysidro border. Inside the city, use a ride app or the clinic driver. Avoid walking long distances in the first days.

Confirm with your surgeon. These are general activity limits from published aftercare guidance. Your clinic's written instructions always come first, and they may be stricter or looser for your procedure.

Recovery timeline

  1. Day 1

Rest until the anaesthetic wears off. Cool, soft food and lukewarm drinks only. Swelling starts.

  2. Days 2 to 3

Swelling and bruising usually peak within 72 hours. Short, easy outings. Soft food, chew on the other side, no hot drinks or very hot dishes.

  3. Days 4 to 7

Swelling goes down. Normal low-effort sightseeing. Food stays soft and non-spicy until your dentist widens your diet. Stitches usually come out at 7 to 10 days.

  4. Before you fly

There is no universal rule on flying. Sinus lifts and bone grafts change the timing, so the flight date comes from your surgeon.

Tijuana tips for recovering patients

  • The return border crossing can mean an hour or more in a queue, much of it outdoors. Ask your clinic whether it can arrange a medical pass for the faster lane.
  • After surgery, plan to cross by car with the clinic driver rather than on foot, and drink water while you wait.

Questions

What can I do in Tijuana after dental work?

In the first three days, stay near Zona Río: CECUT, the Plaza Río mall and short seafront walks at Playas. From around day 4 you can add Avenida Revolución and guided walks. Wine tours, taco crawls and craft beer stay off the list while you are avoiding alcohol and spicy, crunchy food.

Can I cross the border the same day as dental implant surgery?

Many patients do, but the queue back into the United States can be long and partly outdoors. Ask your clinic about a medical pass for the faster lane, and rest before you cross.

Is Tijuana safe for dental tourists?

Most dental tourists stay in Zona Río and use clinic transfers or ride apps. Check current travel advice from your own government before you go.
