Istanbul after dental implants: a day-by-day guide
Implants in Istanbul mean a few days of swelling, soft food and no hot tea, in a city famous for its kebabs and simit. Here is what fits each day, and where to find soft food that tastes of Istanbul.
Make a dated calendar for your trip
At a glance
- How long to stay
- 5 to 10 days for implant placement or All-on-4; a second trip months later for the final teeth is common
- What the rules are about
- The first 72 hours bring swelling and some bruising. The rules are about soft, cool food, no smoking or straws, no strenuous exercise and keeping heat away from the wound.
- Weather
- Hot, sunny summers (often above 28°C in July and August) and cool, wet winters. Spring and autumn are the easiest months for recovery sightseeing.
- Getting around
- Use taxis or a ride app door to door in the first days. Trams and the metro are fast but packed at rush hour. Public ferries between Europe and Asia are cheap, seated and calm.
Confirm with your surgeon. These are general activity limits from published aftercare guidance. Your clinic's written instructions always come first, and they may be stricter or looser for your procedure.
Recovery timeline
- Day 1
Rest until the anaesthetic wears off. Cool, soft food and lukewarm drinks only. Swelling starts.
- Days 2 to 3
Swelling and bruising usually peak within 72 hours. Short, easy outings. Soft food, chew on the other side, no hot drinks or very hot dishes.
- Days 4 to 7
Swelling goes down. Normal low-effort sightseeing. Food stays soft and non-spicy until your dentist widens your diet. Stitches usually come out at 7 to 10 days.
- Before you fly
There is no universal rule on flying. Sinus lifts and bone grafts change the timing, so the flight date comes from your surgeon.

What to do each day
Rest at the hotel until the numbness has gone. Eat only once it has worn off, and keep food soft and cool. A short evening walk is the most you need today.

Istanbul tips for recovering patients
- Sultanahmet and Beyoğlu are hilly with uneven cobbles. Take a taxi up hills in the first week.
- Mosques ask women to cover their hair. If you have had a hair transplant, ask your clinic whether a loose scarf is acceptable, or skip mosque interiors in the first week.
- Nargile (water pipe) cafés are smoky. Skip them after eye surgery and dental work.

Pharmacies and emergencies
Pharmacies (eczane) are on almost every street. At night one duty pharmacy (nöbetçi eczane) per neighbourhood stays open, and every closed pharmacy posts the list of duty pharmacies in its window.
Emergency: 112 for ambulance, police and fire.
Questions
Can I drink Turkish tea after dental implants?
Not hot in the first days. Heat encourages bleeding, so let it cool to lukewarm and ask your surgeon when normal hot drinks are fine.
What soft food can I eat in Istanbul after implants?
Lentil soup and stews at an esnaf lokantası, mantı, and milk puddings like sütlaç. Let hot dishes cool first.
Can I go on a Bosphorus cruise after implant surgery?
Yes. It is seated and calm, so it suits the first days well. Skip the dinner and drinks until your dentist says so.
