What to do in Istanbul after a hair transplant
Hair transplant recovery in Istanbul, day by day: what the grafts can handle each day, what to see, what to skip and where to eat while you wait for the crusts to fall.
Make a dated calendar for your trip
At a glance
- How long to stay
- 3 to 5 days in the city is typical; many patients stay 7 to 10 to see the crusts through
- What the rules are about
- Grafts are fragile for the first 7 to 10 days. The rules are about keeping the scalp out of the sun, dry except for the clinic's washing method, cool and untouched.
- Weather
- Hot, sunny summers (often above 28°C in July and August) and cool, wet winters. Spring and autumn are the easiest months for recovery sightseeing.
- Getting around
- Use taxis or a ride app door to door in the first days. Trams and the metro are fast but packed at rush hour. Public ferries between Europe and Asia are cheap, seated and calm.
Confirm with your surgeon. These are general activity limits from published aftercare guidance. Your clinic's written instructions always come first, and they may be stricter or looser for your procedure.
Recovery timeline
- Days 1 to 3
Clinic check and first wash. Swelling of the forehead often builds and may reach the eyes. No sun on the scalp, no hat pressing on grafts, no sweating, no bending far forward.
- Days 4 to 7
Swelling settles. Light sightseeing with breaks, in shade, with a loose clean hat only if your clinic allows it. Still no swimming, steam or exercise.
- Days 8 to 10
Crusts loosen and fall away with washing. Longer outings are fine but the scalp stays out of direct sun, water and heat for weeks yet.
- After you fly home
Clinics commonly ask for 2 weeks without exercise, a month without swimming or sauna, and months of careful sun protection. Your own aftercare sheet sets the exact dates.

What to do each day
Most clinics see you the morning after for a check and the first wash, done by the clinic team. Grafts are at their most fragile today. Keep it short: a slow walk near the hotel and one indoor sight by taxi is plenty.

Day 1 in detail: rules, 4 safe activities, 2 to skip, where to eat
Swelling often starts to show on the forehead between days 2 and 4. Sleep semi-upright as your clinic advised. Washing at the hotel usually starts now, using the clinic's exact method. Plan indoor, seated sights.

Day 4 in detail: rules, 4 safe activities, 2 to skip, where to eat
Many clinics allow a loose, clean hat outdoors from around now, as long as it does not rub or press on the grafts. A seated boat trip in the shade is a good half-day.

For your companion
Your companion has the same idle days without the restrictions. These are the things the patient has to skip on most days of this guide, which makes them perfect solo outings.
Turkish hammam
Steam, hot marble and a vigorous scrub. A must for your companion, a no for most patients.
Gentle walking, indoors, about 1.5 hours
Basilica Cistern
The cool, dim underground cistern with the Medusa heads. Walkways get packed at midday; go at opening time.
Gentle walking, indoors, about 1 hour
Hagia Sophia
The great dome is worth it, but queues stand in the sun and the inside is crowded. Women cover their hair and everyone removes shoes.
Gentle walking, some open-air walking, about 1.5 hours
Grand Bazaar
A covered maze of 4,000 shops. Shaded, but shoulder to shoulder at peak times. Go early on a weekday.
Gentle walking, indoors, about 2 hours
Guided food tour with ferry ride
Street food on both continents: kebab, pickles, baklava and more, with a lot of walking in between.
A few hours on foot with breaks, some open-air walking, about 4 hours
Balat and Fener streets
Colourful houses, antique shops and cafés on steep cobbled lanes. Lovely, but hilly and sunny.
A few hours on foot with breaks, mostly in full sun, about 3 hours
Istanbul tips for recovering patients
- Sultanahmet and Beyoğlu are hilly with uneven cobbles. Take a taxi up hills in the first week.
- Mosques ask women to cover their hair. If you have had a hair transplant, ask your clinic whether a loose scarf is acceptable, or skip mosque interiors in the first week.
- Nargile (water pipe) cafés are smoky. Skip them after eye surgery and dental work.

Pharmacies and emergencies
Pharmacies (eczane) are on almost every street. At night one duty pharmacy (nöbetçi eczane) per neighbourhood stays open, and every closed pharmacy posts the list of duty pharmacies in its window.
Emergency: 112 for ambulance, police and fire.
Questions
Can I go sightseeing after a hair transplant in Istanbul?
Yes, from the day after the procedure, if you choose the right sights. Days 1 to 3 suit seated, covered places reached by taxi, such as the Bosphorus cruise or a museum. From about day 4, gentle half-days in shade are usually fine. Direct sun on the scalp, sweating, swimming, the hammam and anything pressing on the grafts stay off the list.
Can I wear a hat after a hair transplant?
Not in the first days. Many clinics allow a loose, clean, wide hat that does not touch or rub the grafts from around day 5, but clinics differ, so ask yours. Caps, beanies and helmets stay off for weeks.
When can I go in the sun after a hair transplant?
The Istanbul clinic guide cited here says to avoid direct sun for the first two weeks, allow short shaded outings with a protective hat in weeks 3 and 4, and keep protecting the scalp for three months.
Can I go to a Turkish bath after a hair transplant?
No. Steam and heat soften the crusts and stress new grafts. The cited guidance says no sauna, steam room or hot bath for at least the first month, and many clinics say longer.
