Rules last checked against the cited guidance on 2 November 2026.

Make a dated calendar for your trip

At a glance

How long to stay
7 to 10 days, so the splint can be removed by your surgeon before you fly
What the rules are about
You wear a splint for 1 to 2 weeks and swelling lasts 4 to 6 weeks. The rules are about protecting the nose from knocks, pressure, sun and heat, keeping your head up and not lifting anything heavy.
Weather
Hot, sunny summers (often above 28°C in July and August) and cool, wet winters. Spring and autumn are the easiest months for recovery sightseeing.
Getting around
Use taxis or a ride app door to door in the first days. Trams and the metro are fast but packed at rush hour. Public ferries between Europe and Asia are cheap, seated and calm.

Confirm with your surgeon. These are general activity limits from published aftercare guidance. Your clinic's written instructions always come first, and they may be stricter or looser for your procedure.

Recovery timeline

  1. Days 1 to 3

Splint and possibly packing. Swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes. Head elevated, cool compresses on the cheeks, no nose blowing.

  2. Days 4 to 6

Pain usually eases within a few days to a week. Short, calm outings in the shade, away from crowds.

  3. Days 7 to 10

The splint usually comes off around the end of the first week. You can see the new shape, still swollen. No glasses resting on the bridge.

  4. Weeks 2 to 6

Light exercise from about 4 to 6 weeks and no heavy lifting for 4 to 6 weeks. Swelling keeps going down for months.

What to do each day

  1. Most of today is rest with your head raised. Breathing through your mouth is normal with packing or internal splints. Do not blow your nose. If you want to get out, keep it to one short, seated outing by taxi.

For your companion

Your companion has the same idle days without the restrictions. These are the things the patient has to skip on most days of this guide, which makes them perfect solo outings.

  • Basilica Cistern

The cool, dim underground cistern with the Medusa heads. Walkways get packed at midday; go at opening time.

Gentle walking, indoors, about 1 hour

  • Hagia Sophia

The great dome is worth it, but queues stand in the sun and the inside is crowded. Women cover their hair and everyone removes shoes.

Gentle walking, some open-air walking, about 1.5 hours

  • Topkapı Palace

Courtyards, the Harem and the treasury. Three hours of walking with long open-air stretches between buildings.

A few hours on foot with breaks, some open-air walking, about 3 hours

  • Grand Bazaar

A covered maze of 4,000 shops. Shaded, but shoulder to shoulder at peak times. Go early on a weekday.

Gentle walking, indoors, about 2 hours

  • Guided food tour with ferry ride

Street food on both continents: kebab, pickles, baklava and more, with a lot of walking in between.

A few hours on foot with breaks, some open-air walking, about 4 hours

  • Turkish hammam

Steam, hot marble and a vigorous scrub. A must for your companion, a no for most patients.

Gentle walking, indoors, about 1.5 hours

Istanbul tips for recovering patients

  • Sultanahmet and Beyoğlu are hilly with uneven cobbles. Take a taxi up hills in the first week.
  • Mosques ask women to cover their hair. If you have had a hair transplant, ask your clinic whether a loose scarf is acceptable, or skip mosque interiors in the first week.
  • Nargile (water pipe) cafés are smoky. Skip them after eye surgery and dental work.

Pharmacies and emergencies

Pharmacies (eczane) are on almost every street. At night one duty pharmacy (nöbetçi eczane) per neighbourhood stays open, and every closed pharmacy posts the list of duty pharmacies in its window.

Emergency: 112 for ambulance, police and fire.

Questions

How long should I stay in Istanbul after rhinoplasty?

Most patients stay 7 to 10 days so the surgeon can remove the splint and check the nose before they fly.

Can I wear sunglasses after rhinoplasty?

Only if they do not press on the bridge of your nose. Ask your surgeon about taping or a lightweight pair.

What can I do in Istanbul with a nose splint?

Seated, shaded and uncrowded things: the Bosphorus cruise, the Kadıköy ferry, a whirling dervish ceremony, quiet museums. Avoid the Grand Bazaar and other crowded places where you could be knocked.
