When can I fly home after surgery abroad?

It depends on the procedure. Some patients fly the next day; after abdominal surgery the CDC advises waiting at least 10 days. Your surgeon's written travel clearance is what counts.

Confirm with your surgeon. Book flexible flights, and build your last check-up into the trip before you book the return.

On any long flight after surgery

  • Get up and walk about every hour, and drink water. Long journeys of 4 hours or more raise the risk of blood clots, and surgery adds to it.
  • Keep medicines and your clinic's paperwork in your hand luggage.
  • Know the warning signs of a clot: pain and swelling in one leg, or sudden breathlessness and chest pain, which need urgent help.
