When can I go in the sun after a hair transplant?

Short answer: Keep the grafted area out of direct sun for the first two weeks. From weeks 3 and 4, short outings early or late in the day with a protective hat are usually fine. Keep protecting the scalp for about three months.

Confirm with your surgeon. These are general activity limits from published aftercare guidance. Your clinic's written instructions always come first, and they may be stricter or looser for your procedure.

The sun timeline

WhenWhat the guidance says
Weeks 1 and 2Stay indoors as much as possible and avoid direct sunlight on the scalp entirely.
Weeks 3 and 4Short outdoor walks in the early morning or late afternoon are acceptable with a protective, UV-blocking hat.
Months 1 to 3Gradually reintroduce mild sun with your surgeon's approval. Keep using a hat and, once allowed, sunscreen.
After 3 monthsNormal outdoor activity, with ongoing sun protection recommended.

Timeline from the Istanbul clinic guide cited below. Other clinics are slightly looser; a US clinic sheet allows sunscreen on the scalp from day 10.

Why the sun matters

New grafts sit in a healing scalp with no hair to shade it. UV can cause redness and irritation and slow healing, and clinics warn it can cost grafts. Heat and sweat add to the problem, because they soften the crusts that hold the grafts in place in the first days.

Hats and shade in practice

  • In the first days, most clinics say nothing should touch the grafts. Use shade, an umbrella and indoor sights.
  • From around day 4 or 5, many clinics allow a loose, very clean hat. Avoid wool beanies and anything that clings to the grafts.
  • Pick a breathable hat with a wide brim. Tight caps and helmets stay off for weeks.
  • Plan outdoor sights for before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m., especially from May to October in Istanbul.

Questions

Can I use sunscreen on my scalp after a hair transplant?

Not straight away. One clinic sheet allows sunscreen on the scalp from around day 10 to two weeks; another says only once your doctor confirms it, usually after the crusts have fully shed.

Is cloudy weather safe after a hair transplant?

UV gets through cloud. Treat a bright cloudy day like a sunny one in the first weeks: shade and a loose hat.
