When can I swim after a hair transplant?
Short answer: The cautious answer is no swimming of any kind for the first month. Many clinics then allow pools or the sea from about 4 to 6 weeks. Saunas, steam rooms and hot tubs usually wait longer, up to three months.
Confirm with your surgeon. These are general activity limits from published aftercare guidance. Your clinic's written instructions always come first, and they may be stricter or looser for your procedure.

Why water is a risk
Before the crusts have shed, water from pools, lakes and the sea carries bacteria and minerals that can disturb healing grafts. Chlorine and salt irritate a healing scalp, and heat from saunas and hot tubs makes you sweat, which softens the crusts.
When you do go back in
- Wear a loose swim cap for the first sessions.
- Keep the first swims short.
- Rinse with fresh water and a gentle shampoo afterwards to remove salt or chlorine.
