Can I fly after dental implants?

Short answer: There is no universal rule. The extent of surgery, whether you had a sinus lift or bone graft, and how your first days go all change the timing. Your flight clearance comes from your surgeon as part of the treatment plan.

Confirm with your surgeon. These are general activity limits from published aftercare guidance. Your clinic's written instructions always come first, and they may be stricter or looser for your procedure.

What changes the timing

  • Sinus lifts and bone grafts. Surgery near the sinuses is the main reason surgeons delay flights, because of cabin pressure changes.
  • Swelling. It usually peaks within 72 hours and settles after about three days.
  • Stitches and checks. Stitches are often removed at 7 to 10 days, and clinics usually want to see you before you fly.

How to plan the return flight

  • Build your review appointments into the stay before you book the return flight.
  • Book a flexible or changeable ticket.
  • Get your follow-up schedule and written handover documents before you leave.
  • On flights of 4 hours or more, walk about every hour and drink water.

Filling the days before your flight

Our day-by-day guides cover: Antalya · Tijuana · Budapest · Bangkok · Istanbul.

Tijuana patients usually cross back into San Diego by car, so flying is often later and from the US side.
