What to eat after dental implants, abroad
Short answer: For the first days after implant surgery, eat soft, lukewarm food and chew on the opposite side. Skip crunchy, sticky, spicy and very hot food, and do not use a straw. Widen your diet only when your dentist agrees.
Confirm with your surgeon. These are general activity limits from published aftercare guidance. Your clinic's written instructions always come first, and they may be stricter or looser for your procedure.
The rules
- Soft food only, chewed on the side away from the implant.
- Lukewarm, not hot. Heat encourages bleeding at first.
- No crunchy, sticky or spicy food in the first days.
- No straws, no smoking, no alcohol during early recovery.
Soft food in Antalya
- Lentil soup and home-style stews. Canteens near Kalekapısı serve soups and stews all day. Let soup cool before eating.
- Antalya piyaz. The local white bean salad with tahini, egg and lemon. Soft and filling.
- Dondurma. Stretchy Turkish ice cream from the old town stalls. Go slowly if your teeth are sensitive.
Soft food in Tijuana
- Caldo de res or caldo de pollo. Beef or chicken broth with soft vegetables, at any fonda. Let it cool after dental work.
- Tamales. Steamed corn dough with soft fillings, sold in the mornings from street carts and bakeries.
- Licuados. Fruit and milk smoothies from juice stands. Drink from the cup, not a straw, after dental work.
- Flan and arroz con leche. Mexico's soft desserts, sold in bakeries and fondas.
Soft food in Budapest
- Goulash soup. Gulyásleves is a soup, not a stew: beef, paprika and soft potatoes. Let it cool after dental work.
- Főzelék at a canteen. Thick vegetable stews such as pea or squash, served in simple lunch places.
- Palacsinta. Thin Hungarian pancakes with jam, sweet cheese or chocolate.
- Cakes at a classic café. Dobos, Esterházy and Rigó Jancsi cakes at Gerbeaud, Ruszwurm or the New York Café.
- Chicken paprikash with nokedli. Chicken in a creamy paprika sauce with soft egg dumplings.
Soft food in Bangkok
- Jok (rice porridge). Silky rice porridge with ginger and egg, sold from early morning. Ideal after dental work, once it has cooled.
- Mango sticky rice. Sweet coconut sticky rice with ripe mango.
- Mild noodle soup. Kuay teow nam: rice noodles in clear broth. Ask for no chilli.
- Coconut ice cream. Served in a coconut shell at markets and malls.
Soft food in Istanbul
- Esnaf lokantası lunch. Tradesmen's canteens serve soups, stews, rice and vegetable dishes from steam trays. Point at what you want. Let soup cool if you have had dental work.
- Mantı in Kadıköy or Beşiktaş. Tiny dumplings under garlic yogurt and chilli butter. Ask for the butter on the side if you need it mild.
- Milk puddings at a muhallebici. Sütlaç, kazandibi and tavuk göğsü: soft, cool and very Istanbul.
Foods to leave for later
- Crusty bread, simit, lángos, chimney cake, churros and tostadas.
- Nuts, seeds and crisps that can lodge in the wound.
- Chilli-heavy dishes like som tam, tom yum, birria and Adana kebab.
- Anything straight off the grill or the stove before it has cooled.
Questions
Can I drink coffee after dental implants?
Not very hot. Heat can encourage bleeding and irritate the area, so let drinks cool to lukewarm at first and ask your surgeon when normal hot drinks are fine.
Why no straws after implant surgery?
Sucking through a straw can disturb the blood clot over the wound and delay healing.
