Make a dated calendar for your trip
At a glance
- How long to stay
- 7 to 14 days: most teams want to see you at the first wound check, commonly one to two weeks after surgery
- What the rules are about
- Expect soreness and swelling for two to three weeks. The rules are about not lifting or reaching overhead, wearing the support bra, no baths or hot tubs, sleeping inclined on your back and staying near the clinic until your wound check.
- Weather
- Hot, sunny summers (often above 28°C in July and August) and cool, wet winters. Spring and autumn are the easiest months for recovery sightseeing.
- Getting around
- Use taxis or a ride app door to door in the first days. Trams and the metro are fast but packed at rush hour. Public ferries between Europe and Asia are cheap, seated and calm.
Confirm with your surgeon. These are general activity limits from published aftercare guidance. Your clinic's written instructions always come first, and they may be stricter or looser for your procedure.
Recovery timeline
- Days 1 to 3
The chest feels stiff and sore for two to five days. Rest, take short walks, sleep inclined on your back and keep the support bra on.
- Days 4 to 7
Pain usually eases within a few days. Gentle sightseeing is fine, but nothing lifted above your head and no straining.
- Days 8 to 10
The first wound check. Stitches come out after one to two weeks unless they dissolve. Ask about flying.
- Weeks 2 to 6
No heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for at least a month. Most people are back to normal activities around six weeks.

What to do each day
Most people go home the same day or after one night. Rest with your head and shoulders raised, keep the support bra on and take a short walk around your room or the hotel.

For your companion
Your companion has the same idle days without the restrictions. These are the things the patient has to skip on most days of this guide, which makes them perfect solo outings.
Turkish hammam
Steam, hot marble and a vigorous scrub. A must for your companion, a no for most patients.
Gentle walking, indoors, about 1.5 hours
Black Sea beaches at Kilyos
An hour north for sand, sun and swimming in summer.
Gentle walking, mostly in full sun, about 6 hours
Istanbul tips for recovering patients
- Sultanahmet and Beyoğlu are hilly with uneven cobbles. Take a taxi up hills in the first week.
- Mosques ask women to cover their hair. If you have had a hair transplant, ask your clinic whether a loose scarf is acceptable, or skip mosque interiors in the first week.
- Nargile (water pipe) cafés are smoky. Skip them after eye surgery and dental work.

Pharmacies and emergencies
Pharmacies (eczane) are on almost every street. At night one duty pharmacy (nöbetçi eczane) per neighbourhood stays open, and every closed pharmacy posts the list of duty pharmacies in its window.
Emergency: 112 for ambulance, police and fire.
