Istanbul after a BBL (Brazilian butt lift): a day-by-day guide

After a BBL in Istanbul you cannot sit, so the usual cruises and dinners are out. Here is what you can do each day on your feet, and how to plan the flight home.

Rules last checked against the cited guidance on 2 November 2026.

At a glance

How long to stay
10 to 14 days, so your surgeon can check you before a long flight
What the rules are about
The grafted fat needs time to take hold, so the rules are about pressure: no sitting on your buttocks except on a BBL pillow, sleeping face down, wearing the garment around the clock, walking a little every day and waiting at least one to two weeks before flying.
Weather
Hot, sunny summers (often above 28°C in July and August) and cool, wet winters. Spring and autumn are the easiest months for recovery sightseeing.
Getting around
Use taxis or a ride app door to door in the first days. Trams and the metro are fast but packed at rush hour. Public ferries between Europe and Asia are cheap, seated and calm.

Confirm with your surgeon. These are general activity limits from published aftercare guidance. Your clinic's written instructions always come first, and they may be stricter or looser for your procedure.

Recovery timeline

  1. Days 1 to 2

Rest at the hotel in the compression garment, lying face down. Move your hands and feet, and from about day 2 get up for short walks.

  2. Days 3 to 7

Short walks several times a day. No sitting on your buttocks, except briefly on the toilet and to eat.

  3. Days 8 to 14

Many surgeons allow short sits on a BBL pillow from 10 to 14 days. Ask about flying.

  4. Weeks 3 to 8

Keep pressure off the buttocks, with short sits only, for about six to eight weeks. Exercise usually restarts at six to eight weeks.

What to do each day

  1. You are back at the hotel in the compression garment. Lie face down, move your hands and feet often and let your companion handle everything. The picks below are for them.

For your companion: Basilica Cistern · Topkapı Palace · Bosphorus sightseeing cruise

Day 1 in detail: rules, 4 safe activities, 2 to skip, where to eat

  2. From about now, get up and walk a few steps every hour or two to keep the blood moving. Lie face down in between. Today is still for your companion to explore.

For your companion: Basilica Cistern · Grand Bazaar · Bosphorus sightseeing cruise

Day 2 in detail: rules, 4 safe activities, 2 to skip, where to eat

Good picks: Basilica Cistern · Hagia Sophia · Istanbul Modern and the Karaköy waterfront

Day 3 in detail: rules, 4 safe activities, 2 to skip, where to eat

  4. A gentle half-hour on foot somewhere quiet is a good outing. Take a taxi only for short hops and lie across the back seat if your surgeon advised it.

Good picks: Basilica Cistern · Grand Bazaar · Hagia Sophia

Day 4 in detail: rules, 4 safe activities, 2 to skip, where to eat

Good picks: Hagia Sophia · Galata Tower · Grand Bazaar

Day 5 in detail: rules, 4 safe activities, 2 to skip, where to eat

  6. Museums and covered markets suit this stage: you stand and walk slowly, and there is always somewhere to stop.

Good picks: Grand Bazaar · Basilica Cistern · Galata Tower

Day 6 in detail: rules, 4 safe activities, 2 to skip, where to eat

  7. Around a week in, ask your surgeon about sitting on a BBL pillow, the garment and flying dates.

Good picks: Grand Bazaar · Hagia Sophia · Basilica Cistern

Day 7 in detail: rules, 4 safe activities, 2 to skip, where to eat

  8. If your surgeon allows it, short sits on a BBL pillow placed behind your thighs can start. Keep each sit short.

Day 8 in detail: rules, 4 safe activities, 2 to skip, where to eat

  9. Plan the journey home: BBL pillow, aisle seat, an hourly walk on board and a companion to lift the bags.

Good picks: Hagia Sophia · Basilica Cistern · Grand Bazaar

Day 9 in detail: rules, 4 safe activities, 2 to skip, where to eat

  10. Most patients are not cleared for a long-haul flight before about two weeks. Keep the pressure off your buttocks for weeks yet.

Good picks: Hagia Sophia · Grand Bazaar · Basilica Cistern

Day 10 in detail: rules, 4 safe activities, 2 to skip, where to eat

For your companion

Your companion has the same idle days without the restrictions. These are the things the patient has to skip on most days of this guide, which makes them perfect solo outings.

  • Bosphorus sightseeing cruise

Two hours on the water past palaces, mansions and both bridges. Pick a seat in the covered cabin or the shaded side of the deck.

Seated, shaded or covered, about 2 hours

  • Bosphorus dinner cruise with show

An evening of seated dinner, folk dance and city lights from the water. Drinks are optional; you can ask for soft drinks only.

    Seated, indoors, about 3 hours

  • Topkapı Palace

Courtyards, the Harem and the treasury. Three hours of walking with long open-air stretches between buildings.

A few hours on foot with breaks, some open-air walking, about 3 hours

  • Guided food tour with ferry ride

Street food on both continents: kebab, pickles, baklava and more, with a lot of walking in between.

A few hours on foot with breaks, some open-air walking, about 4 hours

  • Turkish hammam

Steam, hot marble and a vigorous scrub. A must for your companion, a no for most patients.

Gentle walking, indoors, about 1.5 hours

  • Public ferry from Eminönü to Kadıköy

Twenty calm minutes across the Bosphorus to the Asian side for the price of a transit card. Sit inside by the window and drink a tea.

Seated, shaded or covered, about 1 hour

Istanbul tips for recovering patients

  • Sultanahmet and Beyoğlu are hilly with uneven cobbles. Take a taxi up hills in the first week.
  • Mosques ask women to cover their hair. If you have had a hair transplant, ask your clinic whether a loose scarf is acceptable, or skip mosque interiors in the first week.
  • Nargile (water pipe) cafés are smoky. Skip them after eye surgery and dental work.

Pharmacies and emergencies

Pharmacies (eczane) are on almost every street. At night one duty pharmacy (nöbetçi eczane) per neighbourhood stays open, and every closed pharmacy posts the list of duty pharmacies in its window.

Emergency: 112 for ambulance, police and fire.
