Make a dated calendar for your trip
At a glance
- How long to stay
- 10 to 14 days: usually 1 to 2 nights in hospital, then a hotel near the clinic until your surgeon clears you to fly
- What the rules are about
- A tummy tuck is major surgery on the abdomen. The rules are about walking a little more each day, no lifting or straining, wearing the compression garment, no baths or pools, and staying near the clinic for one to two weeks before a long flight.
- Weather
- Mild and dry most of the year, around 20 to 27°C in summer. Bright sun even when it feels cool.
- Getting around
- Clinics usually include transfers from the San Ysidro border. Inside the city, use a ride app or the clinic driver. Avoid walking long distances in the first days.
Confirm with your surgeon. These are general activity limits from published aftercare guidance. Your clinic's written instructions always come first, and they may be stricter or looser for your procedure.
Recovery timeline
- Days 1 to 2
Usually 1 to 2 nights in hospital. You are helped up to walk within the first day or two. Standing fully upright can be hard at first; that improves.
- Days 3 to 7
Short, frequent walks, a little more each day. Showering usually starts once the drains are out and your surgeon allows it. No lifting, bending or straining.
- Days 8 to 14
A follow-up visit checks the wound, and stitches that do not dissolve often come out around now. Walking further is usually possible. Ask about flying.
- Weeks 3 to 8
No lifting that makes you strain for 6 weeks and no abdominal or strenuous exercise for 6 to 8 weeks. The garment is usually worn for about 6 weeks.

Tijuana tips for recovering patients
- The return border crossing can mean an hour or more in a queue, much of it outdoors. Ask your clinic whether it can arrange a medical pass for the faster lane.
- After surgery, plan to cross by car with the clinic driver rather than on foot, and drink water while you wait.

Questions
Can I cross the border after a tummy tuck?
Many patients do, by car with the clinic driver. Do not lift your own bags, and plan for a queue that can be long and partly outdoors. Get out and walk if the wait is long.
When can I fly home after a tummy tuck in Tijuana?
Surgeons usually advise about one to two weeks near the hospital before a long flight, and the CDC advises medical tourists to wait at least 10 days after abdominal surgery. Ask your surgeon for written clearance.
