What to know
- Medellín's clinics cluster in El Poblado, close to hotels, cafés and recovery houses.
- Many patients spend the first nights in a recovery house with nursing care. Ask what is included before you book.
- Check your surgeon in ReTHUS, the national register of health professionals, and ask whether the clinic is registered in REPS for your surgery.
- After abdominal surgery, the CDC advises waiting at least 10 days before flying. Book a changeable return ticket.
Medellín
Medellín is one of the main destinations in the Americas for cosmetic surgery: BBLs, liposuction, tummy tucks and breast surgery, mostly in clinics around El Poblado. Its spring-like climate makes recovery days easier than in hot beach cities, but the city is hilly, so plan short taxi rides rather than long walks.
Tummy tuck
Medellín
10 days, day by day. A tummy tuck is major surgery on the abdomen.
Open the guideLiposuction
Medellín
7 days, day by day. Liposuction usually means one night in hospital.
Open the guideBBL
Medellín
10 days, day by day. The grafted fat needs time to take hold, so the rules are about pressure: no sitting on your buttocks except on a BBL pillow, sleeping face down, wearing the garment around the clock, walking a little every day and waiting at least one to two weeks before flying.
Open the guideBreast augmentation
Medellín
10 days, day by day. Expect soreness and swelling for two to three weeks.
