Recovery travel guide
Dental implants recovery, day by day
The first 72 hours bring swelling and some bruising. The rules are about soft, cool food, no smoking or straws, no strenuous exercise and keeping heat away from the wound.
When the limits lift
Within the 7 days this guide covers, according to the cited guidance:
- Eating: with care from day 1.
- Hot drinks, hot dishes and heat: with care from day 4.
- Exercise: with care from day 4.
- Smoking, vaping and nargile: still off-limits on day 7. Ask your surgeon when it is safe.
- Alcohol: still off-limits on day 7. Ask your surgeon when it is safe.
- Sun, sea and pools: no limit in this guide.
- Flying home: with care from day 1.
Confirm with your surgeon. These are general activity limits from published aftercare guidance. Your clinic's written instructions always come first, and they may be stricter or looser for your procedure.
At a glance
- How long to stay
- 5 to 10 days for implant placement or All-on-4; a second trip months later for the final teeth is common
- What the rules are about
- The first 72 hours bring swelling and some bruising. The rules are about soft, cool food, no smoking or straws, no strenuous exercise and keeping heat away from the wound.
Recovery timeline
- Day 1
Rest until the anaesthetic wears off. Cool, soft food and lukewarm drinks only. Swelling starts.
- Days 2 to 3
Swelling and bruising usually peak within 72 hours. Short, easy outings. Soft food, chew on the other side, no hot drinks or very hot dishes.
- Days 4 to 7
Swelling goes down. Normal low-effort sightseeing. Food stays soft and non-spicy until your dentist widens your diet. Stitches usually come out at 7 to 10 days.
- Before you fly
There is no universal rule on flying. Sinus lifts and bone grafts change the timing, so the flight date comes from your surgeon.

Day by day
Day 1
Rest at the hotel until the numbness has gone. Eat only once it has worn off, and keep food soft and cool. A short evening walk is the most you need today.
All rules for day 1, with sources
Eating
Soft food only, chewed on the opposite side. No crunchy, sticky or spicy food. No straws: sucking can disturb the clot.

No specific limit in implant aftercare beyond avoiding strenuous activity. Sit in the shade if swelling is still up.

Questions
Can I drink coffee after dental implants?
Not very hot. Heat can encourage bleeding and irritate the area, so let drinks cool to lukewarm at first and ask your surgeon when normal hot drinks are fine.
Why no straws after implant surgery?
Sucking through a straw can disturb the blood clot over the wound and delay healing.
