Recovery travel guide

Liposuction recovery, day by day

Liposuction usually means one night in hospital. The rules are about wearing the compression garment around the clock, walking every day, nothing strenuous for the first weeks and no baths for two weeks.

Rules last checked against the cited guidance on 2 November 2026.

When the limits lift

Within the 7 days this guide covers, according to the cited guidance:

  • Compression garment: with care from day 1.
  • Walking: with care from day 1.
  • Exercise: still off-limits on day 7. Ask your surgeon when it is safe.
  • Showers, baths and pools: still off-limits on day 7. Ask your surgeon when it is safe.
  • Fluid from the cuts: with care from day 1.
  • Flying home: with care from day 1.

Confirm with your surgeon. These are general activity limits from published aftercare guidance. Your clinic's written instructions always come first, and they may be stricter or looser for your procedure.

Liposuction usually means one night in hospital. The rules are about wearing the compression garment around the clock, walking every day, nothing strenuous for the first weeks and no baths for two weeks.

Recovery timeline

  1. Day 1

Most people stay in hospital overnight, and someone should stay with you for the first 24 hours. Fluid can leak from the small cuts for several days.

  2. Days 2 to 7

Walking and general movement are fine. Showering usually starts 24 to 48 hours after surgery if your surgeon agrees. Keep the garment on except in the shower.

  3. Weeks 2 to 4

Bruising and swelling usually improve after 10 to 14 days. Stitches come out after about a week unless they dissolve. Gentle exercise from around 3 to 4 weeks.

  4. Months 1 to 6

The NHS says to avoid strenuous activity for 10 to 12 weeks and to check with your surgeon. It can take up to 6 months for the area to settle.

Questions

Why do surgeons delay flights after a tummy tuck?

Surgery and long journeys both raise the risk of blood clots, and the first wound check and drain removal usually happen in the first one to two weeks.

Should I wear my compression garment on the plane?

Wear it as your surgeon instructs. After liposuction the NHS says it should be worn constantly for several weeks, and after a tummy tuck it is usually worn for about 6 weeks.

Is liposuction recovery easier than a tummy tuck?

Usually yes. Most people return to light work within a few days after liposuction, while after a tummy tuck it is about 2 to 3 weeks, and the NHS suggests 4 to 6 weeks off work and exercise.

Can I have both on the same trip?

Many clinics combine them. Ask your surgeon how that changes the hospital stay, the garment and the flight date, and plan for the longer of the two recoveries.
